Downloading multiple files throughout the day can make it hard to keep them organized. We don’t always download a file and immediately file it in the right place. Weeks later, that download folder is stuffed with hundreds of files that fall under different contexts, types, and priorities. Hazel is a Mac OS X application that looks to solve this problem by automatically organizing your files for you.
Hazel works by monitoring the folders that you tell it to, automatically organizing the files based on rules that are created by the user. Once Hazel starts monitoring, the rules are applied to all the files in said folder, and future files that may be downloaded or copied to it. Hazel features a rules panel that allows you to trigger actions on files based on their type, size, name, date modified or created, the site they were downloaded from, and much more. A few of the actions that Hazel can take are setting color labels, moving files into folders or subfolders, open them with a specified application, import into iTunes, or send to the trash bin.

App Sweep is a feature that allows Hazel to cleanup unused files from uninstalled applications. When an application is deleted, it can often leave behind system files that are hidden or stored away in obscure folders. Hazel can track these files down and make sure they are deleted. If you’d like to restore the application from the trash bin, Hazel can restore the system files into the right places so the app can start up again just as it did before.
Hazel also integrates nicely with OS X’s Spotlight. You can take actions on files based on deeper info found in the file’s metadata, like shutter speed for a picture, or artist name for an MP3. Hazel can then import these files to your iPhoto, or iTunes based on the metadata you specified.
